Summary0000563: Can you make the map slightly smaller please?
DescriptionWhen using an Android device (tablet or phone) to view the output, all is fine as you scroll down until you reach the map. Because the map then fills the screen, any attempt to scroll either up or down simply scrolls the map, you cannot get back to the text areas. If the map could be made just slightly smaller (maybe 10%) there would be a slight margin at the edge and it would be possible to place a finger over that margin to scroll up or down. Not all Android devices see this as a problem because some have a scroll bar, but others such as my Huawei do not have a scroll bar and sometimes I have to give up and go back to the Editor before re-trying

You can change the map size in your preferences.

Keeping Up (reporter)

I cannot find that option in the Preferences section, on any of the tabs, even after looking really hard. Please could you direct me to it.

Nick Atty (administrator)

I may have got rid of the size option and not restored it when creating the new maps...

I can see why not being able to scroll past the maps is very irritating. I was wondering - would turning off scroll (or making it so that it needed something other than just swiping) work, or even be better than putting a small margin down the side?

Keeping Up (reporter)

Yes, it's particularly irritating if you get stuck there and cannot scroll either up or down to get back to the text; the "back" button is the only thing that works, and that doesn't always get you back to what you started with!

I've seen a few sites where if you want to scroll the map you have to use two fingers at once, otherwise the page scrolls. That would perhaps be the best option, but I cannot begin to imagine how you would code it.

There's a lot of discussion about possible solutions - here's an example:

You're proposing option 1. Option 3, where the map can't be dragged on mobile devices isn't too bad. But it's actually pretty irritating on desktops with the scroll wheel as well, because then the map suddenly starts zooming when the cursor falls on it.

There are some ideas around having to activate the map first, and around delays I'd like to experiment with - which will include borrowing one of the girl's mobiles to test!
