The lock Réchicourt-le-Chateau was built in 1965 as part of the development of the Canal de la Marne au Rhin East in order to allow navigation with a depth of 2.20m and to remove a sinuous channel section with 6 locks. The new canal route crosses the Réchicourt lake and required the creation of a dam. The lock is constructed of solid concrete with mitre gate upstream and downstream. The door lifting mechanism is controlled by a 7m hydraulic cylinder, the valves are vertical lift. All the various organs of operation is controlled from the operations cabin. This deep lock (16m rise) takes half an hour to complete one half-cycle, so you may be obliged to wait some time, in which case take time to visit the disused flight of six locks that this deep lock replaced in 1965. However there now follows (travelling east) some 33km of lock-free summit level canal leading to Arzviller.
