Advice notice: Rochdale Canal, Navigation: Open, Towpath: Open - Lock 1 to Deansgate Railway Viaduct — from Monday the 9th of July, 2018 to Tuesday the 9th of July, 2019.

The long-range forecast for the next couple of months looks dry so if we want to be boating all summer long, as ever we’d better look after the water. With more boats on the network than during the height of the industrial revolution, all boaters need to work together to save water. If you’ve been on the Rochdale Canal recently you will be aware of  the THRIFT code which sets out some simple steps that boaters should follow for everyone’s benefit.

THRIFT

Two in a Lock? - Share locks where possible

Help keep it in – Make sure gates and paddles are shut

Report any leaks – tell us

Invite oncoming boats through – Don’t empty or fill locks if someone else can make use of the water

Find another favourite – Explore less busy parts of the network

Think ahead – Plan cruises to minimise use of locks.

Although we’ve only issued the THRIFT code on the Rochdale Canal it’s also worth remembering as good boating practice wherever you are on the network.

Notification sent Monday the 9th of July, 2018

Navigation restriction notice: Rochdale Canal, Navigation: Open, Towpath: Open - Lock 44 to Lock 34 — from Sunday the 15th of July, 2018 to Monday the 15th of July, 2019.

Further to our recent update we wanted to confirm that controls will be introduced on the Rochdale Canal from Sunday 15th July.

In overview the canal will be closed at the Summit on Mondays and Fridays until further notice.  We are also introducing overnight closures on the other days of the week.

The canal will be locked at Locks 34 and 44.  The first locks each evening will be put on at 4pm and our teams will work with boaters in summit sections after that time to ensure their passage out.  Moorings are available immediately below these locks for people arriving after 4 or during one of the closed days.

The canal will be reopened at 9am on open days.

These restrictions are necessary so that we can endeavour to maintain navigation for the rest of the season. We will continue to monitor the water resource position and update as necessary.

Navigation restriction notice: Rochdale Canal, Navigation: Open, Towpath: Open - Lock 1 to Lock 3/4 — from Friday the 20th of July, 2018 to Saturday the 20th of July, 2019.

Update on 17/07/2018:

The feedback from our customers so far has been positive towards the restrictions in this area. However, it is felt that closing Tuel lock on Tuesdays and Thursday would be less disruptive while providing the same protection to the water resource in this section. Bookings will still be available on Wednesdays subject to water supplies. Overnight closures on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays & Mondays.

The canal will be locked off Between Locks 1 and Tuel Lock.  The first locks each evening will be put on at 4pm and our teams will work with boaters in this section after that time to ensure their passage out.  Moorings are available immediately below these locks for people arriving after 4 or during one of the closed days.

The canal will be reopened at 9am on open days.

Listening to our customers is very important to us and following this feedback we are making the subsequent changes.

We would like to thank our customers for their ongoing patience and support

Further to our recent update we wanted to confirm that further controls will be introduced on the Rochdale Canal from Friday 20th July.

In overview the canal will be closed at Tuel Lock on Mondays and Fridays until further notice. Bookings will still be available on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursdays subject to water supplies. We are also introducing overnight closures on Saturdays and Sunday .

Navigation closure notice: Rochdale Canal, Navigation: Closed, Towpath: Open - Lock 1 — from Tuesday the 24th of July, 2018 to Wednesday the 24th of July, 2019.

Unfortunately, the water levels have dropped so low we have to close passage through Tuel Lock until further notice.

These further restrictions are trying to ensure the water levels do not drop further, as this will require us to undertake a fish rescue.

The current water situation will need to improve before we can re-open Tuel. We will provide an update as soon as this has been resolved.

We appologise for the disruption this will cause and we would like to thank our our customers for their ongoing patience and support

Wikipedia has a page about Rochdale Canal

The Rochdale Canal is a navigable broad canal in Northern England, between Manchester and Sowerby Bridge, part of the connected system of the canals of Great Britain. Its name refers to the town of Rochdale, in Greater Manchester, through which it passes.

The Rochdale is a broad canal because its locks are wide enough to allow vessels of 14 feet width. The canal runs for 32 miles (51 km) across the Pennines from the Bridgewater Canal at Castlefield Basin in Manchester to join the Calder and Hebble Navigation at Sowerby Bridge in West Yorkshire.

As built, the canal had 92 locks. Whilst the traditional lock numbering has been retained on all restored locks, and on the relocated locks, the canal now has 91. Locks 3 and 4 have been replaced with a single deep lock, Tuel Lane Lock, which is numbered 3/4.
